Georgetown is the
3rd oldest city in South Carolina. Explorers
from Spain, England and France first arrived
in the 1600’s,
but it was not until 1732 that the seaport was officially established.
Because it’s easily accessed from the Atlantic Ocean
through Winyah Bay, Georgetown was a bustling seaport.
Today, Georgetown
remains a popular boater’s destination.
Boaters from the northeast frequently harbor their vessels here
and enjoy the plethora of rewards that await them. From downtown,
you’re only 20 minutes out from the Atlantic, which played
a vital role in shaping the city’s rich history. Visitors
enjoy the maritime atmosphere along Harborwalk behind the downtown
business district of this quaint fishing village.
A string of unique stores and boutiques make up the heart of
downtown. Restaurants offer indoor seating, as well as romantic
settings outside within a few feet of the lazy Sampit River.
There are two museums offering a look back at the people and
events that shaped this seaport’s past and present.
Residents
will find in Georgetown goods and services to add convenience
to their lives. The city has two hospitals: Georgetown
Memorial
Hospital, a 131-bed, acute-care facility with state-of-the-art
equipment and a full range of inpatient and outpatient services,
and Waccamaw Community Hospital, offering a 54 bed inpatient
facility as well as an acute physical rehabilitation center
with 29 beds.
One of Horry-Georgetown
Technical College’s
three campuses is located just outside Georgetown. The
city also boasts an excellent
public school system.
You’ll be connected! Highway
17 offers easy access to Charleston and Myrtle Beach – both
having airports offering daily flights to all major cities
and the world. |
